Brian K. Hensel, PhD, MSPH

Associate Teaching Professor of Health Management and Informatics, University of Missouri School of Medicine

2008 Fellow

Dr. Hensel, PhD, MSPH, has fifteen years of experience as a health care executive, which included responsibility for a range of post-acute, long-term, and end-of-life care services within vertically integrated, hospital-based health systems. He began his career in health administration after completing his master's (1987) in the University of Missouri Health Services Management program (now Health Management and Informatics, HMI, in the School of Medicine). In 2001, he returned to Missouri to complete a PhD focused in health communication from the Missouri School of Journalism (2005), followed by a National Library of Medicine Postdoctoral Fellowship in Health Informatics (2005 - 2008) in the HMI department.

As a Health and Aging Policy Fellow, Dr. Hensel worked in the office of Senator John D. Rockefeller IV of West Virginia (2008-2009), where he helped develop palliative care and advance planning legislation within the Accountable Care Act (ACA), and health information technology legislation within the Recovery Act. After this he served for four years as Assistant Professor of Health Services Administration in the Beacom School of Business at the University of South Dakota. Dr. Hensel then returned to the University of Missouri HMI Department in January of 2014, where he is an Associate Teaching Professor. His main focus is on teaching Master’s in Health Administration students, and his classes include Health Policy and Politics, where he specifically applies his HAPF experience and training. He is invited to talk to medical students, including about how the ACA increased coverage. Dr. Hensel remains interested in the intersection of media and health care, including news coverage of health policy.
