Heidi Wald, MD, MSPH

Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Health Care Policy Research, Vice Chair of Quality, Department of Medicine, University of Colorado Denver

Dr. Wald is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Health Care Policy Research at the University Of Colorado School Of Medicine where she serves as Vice Chair for Quality in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Wald is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She completed fellowship in Geriatric Medicine, a NRSA Primary Care Research Fellowship, and an MSPH at the University of Colorado Denver.

Dr. Wald has a longstanding interest in patient safety and quality of care for the geriatric patient with a focus on the hospital setting. She was a 2009 recipient of a Paul B. Beeson Career Development Award in Aging, and the principal investigator of a multisite study on the prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. She leads the Society of Hospital Medicine’s Acute Care of Older Patients Priority Setting Partnership. She has published in the areas of hospital acquired conditions, models of acute care of older patients, postoperative infections, sentinel event reporting, and root cause analysis.

At the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH), in addition to running a robust patient safety and quality improvement program for the Department of Medicine, Dr. Wald serves as the co-director of the Acute Care for Elders Service, leads the Multidisciplinary CAUTI Prevention Workgroup, and directed the Quality Improvement Small Grants Program. In 2012, she received the President’s Award for Leadership and in 2014 she received the Clinical Effectiveness and Patient Safety Award, both from the UCH Medical Staff.

Prior to joining the University of Colorado, Dr Wald was director of the Hospitalist Group at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where she was on faculty from 1998-2002. Dr. Wald is board certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine.
