Dr. Hallarman is the Director of Palliative Care Services at Stony Brook Hospital in Stony Brook, NY since 2007. Her program is the recipient of the 2009 National Consensus Project Quality in Palliative Care Leadership Award. In 2013, her program was among the first palliative care programs to receive the Joint Commission Advance Certification for Excellence in Palliative Care. She is a graduate of Yale University School of Medicine and completed her residency training at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. Dr. Hallarman is the recipient of the 2010 Stony Brook Medicine Education Innovation Award for her curriculum work and is currently grant funded to develop a medical student curriculum on health equity and the seriously ill patient. She has worked on the national level as a primary author on palliative care pain and communication curriculum for the Center to Advance Palliative Care. Dr. Hallarman’s academic and publication focus is in developing the palliative care – medical legal partnership (PC-MLP) to help catalyze on a national scale the way that health related legal/financial issues are addressed systemically for patients with serious illness. For the past eight years she has been the physician lead in a grant funded PC-MLP that brings free exigent legal services to cancer patients. Her innovative work in developing and disseminating the PC-MLP approach is recognized at the state and national level.
