Irene H. Yen, PhD, MPH, is a Professor of Public Health at the University of California, Merced, with an affiliated appointment in the Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences at University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Yen is the Principal Investigator and training core co-director for the UC Merced Nicotine & Cannabis Policy Center. Dr. Yen is a social epidemiologist with research expertise in survey design and development and qualitative research methods. She is currently leading a study of health and wellness of public housing residents in Fresno County, located in California’s Central Valley. Together with community partners, she is supporting bringing to the attention to local policy makers housing challenges in Merced County, also in the Central Valley. Her overall research focuses on the social and structural determinants of health, with emphases on how neighborhood environment influences health behaviors and health status and the intersections of race/ethnicity and social class.
