Why I Applied to be a Fellow
"I have practiced as a geriatrician in numerous healthcare organizations for the past 15+ years and there is still lack of consensus across healthcare entities on the optimal duration of an outpatient geriatrics clinic appointment slot. Lower reimbursement rates for intensive outpatient primary care services for older adults is often cited as a reason for the shorter appointment duration, and this is just one example of the inequities older adults with multiple comorbidities face on a daily basis when navigating dysfunctional US healthcare systems. Following my belief that clinicians providing care to older adults should get involved in policymaking to successfully advocate for equitable resources for their patients, I applied for the Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program. The fellowship has been a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience for me and has allowed me to network with policymakers and learn valuable communication skills relevant to advocacy work."
